The Cherokee (who call themselves the Tsalagi) originally occupied a large portion of the Alleghany mountains. Their territory covered what is today the states of Virginia, Tennessee, North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, and Alabama. They had long-runni ng, highly ritualisti c feuds with the Iroquois and other eastern tribes such as the Tuscarora, Catawba, Creeks, and the Shawnee.

However, their most tragic war was with the the US government . In 1839, after a long series of conflicts during which they were pushed westward towards the Mississipp i, the Cherokees were forcibly evicted from their land and marched to Oklahoma in the dead of winter by the US Army. This is today known as the "Trail of Tears", one of the most shameful actions ever taken by the Unites States government .

Many white Americans today claim to trace descent from a Cherokee ancestor (typically a 'Cherokee Princess', which is bizarre because the Cherokee do not have any sort of titular nobility). This has become a running joke for actual Native Americans.

Possibly for this reason, the Cherokee tribe has become a focal point for a lot of white guilt. In this context, the spiritual traditions of the Cherokee have in recent years become the subject of several very popular books.

Th e Myths of the Cherokee, excerpted from the 19th Annual Report of the Bureau of American Ethnology, is a nineteenth century collection of Cherokee myths, legends and folklore by the noted anthropolo gist James Mooney (1861-1921 ), who lived for several years with the Cherokee.

Features of Mooneys' corpus are several stories which (in hindsight) are in X-Files territory, including UFOs, crypto-zoo logical animals, and powerful crystals. In addition, there are numerous tales of a race of magical beings, the Nûñnë'h ï, who sound uncannily like the European fairies or elves, including disguised subterrane an dwellings, time slips during visits and magical boons to mortals who are kind to them. There are also several stories which are obviously borrowed from African sources, probably from escaped slaves who took refuge in the Cherokee nation. Many of the myths and legends have sophistica ted humor which transcends cultural boundaries .

Mooney also debunks some regional southeaste ran lore which is attributed to the Cherokee, but which was made up by local authors. Even at this time there was a great deal of spurious material published about Cherokee beliefs, and Mooney attempted to sort out the genuine material from the bogus.

Th e Sacred Formulas of the Cherokee, published in the 7th Annual report, Bureau of American Ethnology, is a summary of the work Mooney did in preserving a set of Cherokee Shaman's notebooks. This text is a look into the shamanisti c practices of healers among the Cherokee, including the full text in Cherokee and English of several key rituals.

Many, many moons ago, in the beginning of time, the earth was all water. There was no land. All the four-legge ds, all the animals, all the winged-one s, lived up in the sky on the clouds. They were waiting for the land to dry, but it would not dry. They would send one animal but he would come back unable to find dry land. The animals would regularly check the water below. Finally, after a dog had looked and reported back that it was still wet, they sent the water beetle. The water beetle dove into the water, grabbed a handful of mud at the bottom, brought it up and placed it on top of the water; and it started to dry, started to build land. He brought more and more; and still they waited for it to dry, still they waited and waited.

F inally, they sent grandfathe r buzzard, the mighty buzzard, down and the land was almost dry. As the buzzard flew, he'd fly down close to the land; and every time he would flap his mighty wings, he would form a mountain and a valley. That's why the Cherokee land has mountains and valleys in it today. All the animals came down and settled on the earth.

Af ter they did, they realized they had no light. So they called to Grandfathe r and asked would he give them light, and he did. He brought to them the sun. He put the sun down right by the ground, and it was too hot for the animals. So they pushed and pushed, till finally they got it far enough out that it would not burn all the time; but it was still so hot that the crawfish was baked. That's why, if you look at him today, he is red from the sun being too close.

Fi nally, they got the sun far enough out so it would not burn and we would have night. And Grandfathe r told them, "Now that I have done this for you, I ask that all the four-legge d, and all the animals, and all the plants stay awake for seven days and for seven nights." This is why today, when a warrior goes to cross his manhood, he fasts and sweats for seven days.

All the animals and all the plants fell asleep except for some. The owl stayed awake, and that's why he has vision to hunt at night now. The plants, the Douglas fir, the cedar, the pine, and a few others stayed awake for seven nights and for seven days. That's why only these, among all the plants, are allowed to stay green all the year round. The other plants fell asleep and so must sleep part of every year.

He failed to do the work, and the Rattlesnak e had to be sent instead, which made the Uktena so jealous and angry that the people were afraid of him and had him taken up to Galunlati, to stay with the other dangerous things. He left others behind him, though, nearly as large and dangerous as himself, and they hide now in deep pools in the river and about lonely passes in the high mountains, the places the Cherokees call "Where the Uktena stays."

T hose who know say the Uktena is a great snake, as large around as a tree trunk, with horns on its head, and a bright blazing crest like a diamond on its forehead, and scales glowing like sparks of fire. It has rings or spots of color along its whole length, and can not be wounded except by shooting in the seventh spot from the head, because under this spot are its heart and its life. The blazing diamond is called Ulun'suti -- "Transpare nt" -- and he who can win it may become the greatest wonder worker of the tribe. But it is worth a man's life to attempt it, for whoever is seen by the Uktena is so dazed by the bright light that he runs toward the snake instead of trying to escape. Even to see the Uktena asleep is death, not to the hunter himself, but to his family.

O f all the daring warriors who have started out in search of the Ulun'suti only Aganunitsi ever came back successful . The East Cherokee still keep the one that he brought. It is a large transparen t crystal, nearly the shape of a cartridge bullet, with a blood-red streak running throughout the center from top to bottom. The owner keeps it wrapped in a whole deerskin, inside an earthen jar hidden away in a secret cave in the mountains. Every seven days he feeds it with the blood of small game, rubbing the blood all over the crystal as soon as the animal has been killed. Twice a year it must have the blood of a deer or other large animal. Should he forget to feed it at the proper time it would come out of its cave in a shape of fire and fly through the air to slake its thirst with the lifeblood of the conjurer or some one of his people. He may save himself from this danger by telling it, when he puts it away, that he will not need it again for a long time. It will then go quietly to sleep and feel no hunger until it is again brought forth to be consulted. Then it must be fed again with blood before it is used.

No white man must ever see it and no person but the owner will venture near it for fear of sudden death. Even the conjurer who keeps it is afraid of it, and changes its hiding place every once in a while so it can not learn the way out. When he dies it will be buried with him. Otherwise it will come out of its cave, like a blazing star, to search for his grave, night after night for seven years, when, if still not able to find him, it will go back to sleep forever where he has placed it. Whoever owns the Ulun'suti is sure of success in hunting, love, rainmaking , and every other business, but its great use is in life prophecy. When it is consulted for this purpose the future is seen mirrored in the clear crystal as a tree is reflected in the quiet stream below it, and the conjurer knows whether the sick man will recover, whether the warrior will return from battle, or whether the youth will live to be old.
